Tips and Suggestions!

  • Get a SIM card for your phone when you get there. They’re pretty cheap and will save you when you need to call local/look for directions somewhere.

  • Not many local places take credit/debit cards. The best way to get cash is to to to a local ATM. Don’t try to do a foreign currency exchange- you end up losing more money. Also, if using a credit card, use one that doesn’t have a foreign exchange fee because those add up quickly. Don't forget to grab your card out of ATM !

  • Arrange travel from airport prior. Most hotels/resorts can arrange it for you. Taxis “Taksis” will rip you off. Also, most taxis can negotiate price. You can even walk away and sometimes they follow you yelling lower prices. Same goes for shopping at local places. If it doesn’t have a price tag, ALWAYS negotiate. They say 300.000 for a shirt, you say 75.000. They mark it up A LOT and almost always meet in the middle. Especially if you act like you’re leaving. Also be careful with Taxis because some will tell you they’re a taxi and they’re not..

  • Familiarize yourself with the currency exchange there - or download a currency exchange app to do the math for you - this will make life easier!

  • Don’t drink the water, or anything like fruits/veggies washed with the water. Ask at restaurants if they use filtered water to clean and prep the food. Most places do. DO NOT EAT STREET FOOD. You will get sick.
